The 2018 GSBL regular season is completed which means we have some recognizing to do. The players that we are about to list earned their awards whether they be performance-based or chosen by our analysts. In our opinion, this season of basketball was absolutely incredible and our decision-making process was very long and hard. Many hours were spent pouring over stats and footage to determine WHO earned these awards.

As a DISCLAIMER, we do NOT recognize or honor the players that spent ANY time on the 2 WEEK CL. While they may end up on the 2018 All-GSBL Teams or be highlighted with a “performance-based” award, we will NOT choose any of those players.

Let’s begin with the Performance-Based Awards:

  • 2018 GSBL Regular Season Scoring Award (Most Points)
    • Sam Burcham: 86 points
    • Mac Mayfield: 86 points
      • Both players averaged 14.3 PPG to end the season in a two-way tie for 1st in the point scoring!
  • 2018 GSBL Regular Season Assist Award (Most Assists)
    • Tyler Mackay: 30 assists
      • Tyler averaged 5 APG throughout the course of the season.
  • 2018 GSBL Regular Season Three Point Champion (Most 3’s)
    • Carl Baltazar: 17 three pointers
      • Carl shot 17/68 from beyond the arc to draw a tie in 3’s!
    • Matt Colasanti: 17 three pointers
      • Matt shot 17/42 from beyond the arc to draw a tie in 3’s!
  • 2018 GSBL Regular Season Robber Award (Most Steals)
    • Nate Webb: 19 steals
      • He had quick hands and quick feet as he robbed his way to 1st place!
  • 2018 GSBL Regular Season Rejection Award (Most Blocks)
    • Stephen Roueche: 18 blocks
      • Stephen registered 5 blocks in the regular season finale to capture 1st place!
  • 2018 GSBL Regular Season Turnover King (Most Turnovers)
    • Sam Burcham: 33 turnovers
      • While this is definitely not a prestigious award, Sam fumbled his way to 1st place!
  • 2018 GSBL Regular Season Charitable Donation Award (Most Free Throws Made)
    • Sam Burcham: 36 free throws made
      • His #1 constant was the fact that Sam would get to the line EVERY game and make his freebies. In fact, he averaged 6 made free throws a game!
  • 2018 GSBL Regular Season Foul Play Award (Most Fouls)
    • Duke Andrade: 25 fouls
      • Duke managed to rack up the fouls while sprinting his way to 1st place!

Since the Performance-Based Awards have been designated, let’s take a look at the CHOSEN awards which were decided on by our team of analysts.

  • 2018 GSBL Regular Season MVP (Most Valuable Player)
    • Sam Burcham
      • After his team started 0-2 being led by another captain, Sam was given the reins and given an entire month before his 1st game as captain! Once the season resumed, Burcham improved not only in his offensive production; but also in ball control. Through the 1st two games, Burcham registered 16 turnovers. In his last 4 games, he only registered 17. While some players might have a case for MVP, Sam earned the MVP honors as his team went 3-1 after he took over the captaincy. He proved his value in late-game situations in which he would get to the free throw line and make his free throws. Not only did he score 86 points, he also grabbed 54 rebounds and dished out 18 assists! Without Team Captain Sam Burcham, Team Burcham would have finished the season 0-6 without a question!
  • 2018 GSBL Regular Season MOP (Most Outstanding Player or Best Player)
    • Trent Bailey
      • As voted on by our analysts, Trent received 4 First Place Votes to secure the Best Player Award. Bailey scored 46 points, grabbed 91 rebounds, 17 steals and picked up 10 blocks. The stat that resounded with EVERY one of our analysts was the 33.9% shooting! His shooting percentage was better than everyone except Stephen Roueche. (Minimum 55 attempts) Any player could be the “best player” by jacking up 75+ shots. If you only make 25% of them, we don’t consider that outstanding. Especially if you also racked up the turnovers. Bailey was outstanding in every regard and despite his 18 turnovers (3 per game), his work in the paint gives him the most outstanding player award for the 2018 GSBL!!
        • Trent Bailey: 4 First Place Votes (12 Points)
        • Brad Keeton: 1 Second Place Vote (2 Points)
        • Patrick Seamster: 1 Second Place Vote (2 Points)
        • Stephen Roueche: 1 Second Place Vote (2 Points)
        • Tyler Mackay: 1 Second Place Vote (2 Points)
        • Nate Webb: 2 Third Place Vote (2 Points)
        • Matt Colasanti: 1 Third Place Vote (1 Point)
        • Norman Cook: 1 Third Place Vote (1 Point)
  • 2018 GSBL Regular Season Freshman Phenom (Best Rookie)
    • Trent Bailey
      • In his 1st season in a GSBL uniform, Trent picked up right where he left off in high school! He finished the season with 46 points and 91 rebounds, but his game play was inspired and soft-spoken. His defensive work was a bonus for Team Monteiro as he grabbed 17 steals and picked up 10 blocks. Trent was big down the stretch to help his team get the #2 seed going into the playoffs and IF Team Monteiro is going to contend for the championship, they will need their freshman big guy to be even better in the playoffs!
  • 2018 GSBL Regular Season DPOY (Defensive Player of the Year)
    • Patrick Seamster
      • Patrick garnered a total of 26 defensive points. We calculate these totals by adding the number of steals and blocks. In addition to the defensive points, Patrick also protected the glass on the defensive side and helped prevent many second chance points from being allowed!
  • 2018 GSBL Regular Season 6th Man Award (Best Bench Player)
    • David Koehler
      • David came off the bench 4 times this season and helped Team Mayfield fill in the cracks when they needed it the most. He grabbed 14 rebounds scored 12 points, grabbed 9 steals, dished 7 assists and registered 1 block! His downside was so minimal as he only gave up 3 turnovers. Koehler was the spark for Team Mayfield on numerous occasions that helped them weather the storm and stay in the game!
  • 2018 GSBL Regular Season Unsung Hero Award (Best Unknown Player)
    • Tyler Pettis
      • We rarely heard much from Tyler all season as we content to be in the background in just about every game. He showed up, did his job and went back to his dorm room. Quietly, he scored 41 points and grabbed 55 rebounds. Another thing about his game play was that the majority of his points were scored off 2nd chance opportunities in the paint.
  • 2018 GSBL Regular Season Sportsmanship Award (Most Class)
    • Nate Webb
      • As voted on by the scorer’s table, Nate Webb is our pick for the Sportsmanship Award. He executed the highest amount of class towards the scorer’s table, the opposing team and the referees.
  • 2018 Shamrock Shake Award (Most Exciting Player to Watch)
    • Matthew Wallace
      • Very few players generated a crowd reaction like the way Wallace generated every time he scored. The connection between player and fans is what really determines the Shamrock Shake Award and Matthew connected in a very influential way!
