The 2017 Golden State Soccer League has come to a conclusion! Now it is time to hand out the end of the season awards to the players that most definitely deserve it! First, we will start with the Performance Based Awards which are strictly based upon performance and overall stats.

  • 2017 GSSL Best Captain Award
    • Maico Rubio: (4-2-0, W-D-L)
      • A well deserved recognition for a talented goalie in our league! He kept his team knit together and produced one of the best overall records in the history of the GSSL!
  • 2017 GSSL Golden Shoe Award
    • Bryan Rodriguez: 8 goals
      • To score 8 goals in 6 games is impressive even for the best soccer player in our league! He even missed half of 2 of the games due to injuries! So technically, 8 goals in 5 games!!
  • 2017 GSSL Brick Wall Award
    • Jeremiah Lendt: 42 saves
      • It is only fair that we recognize the goalie with MOST saves as he also faced the most shot attempts. Jeremiah was literally the ONLY reason why his team did not get blown out every game!
  • 2017 GSSL Foul King Award
    • Ruben Iniguez: 13 fouls
      • An aggressive athlete filled with a passion to play soccer, Ruben took home the foul award by 5 fouls!!
  • 2017 GSSL Roof Builder Award (Most Ceiling Balls)
    • Aaron Lopez and Moises Perez: 8 ceiling balls
      • Not much needs to be said about this award. Some people just have no control over their clearances, but when a player can average more than 1 per game…we must give honor to whom honor is due!
  • 2017 GSSL Slap Ball Award (Most Hand Balls)
    • Ari Hernandez and Luis Elizondo: 5 hand balls
      • We can understand Luis getting 5 hand balls due to his playing a full season; however, Mr. Hernandez only played in 3 games!!

The next awards are the “Chosen Awards” picked specifically by our analysts at the GSBC Bleacher Report!

  • 2017 GSSL MVP (Most Valuable Player)
    • Lorenzo Varela
      • One of the most consistent players in our league—Lorenzo helped his team settle down and win their last game to clinch the #2 seed going into the playoffs. He also added 3 goals and 2 assists including 70 shots with 18 hitting in the target. His calming presence on the soccer court is a BIG reason why the Wildcats were able to have a chance in winning or tying every one of their games! These are the reasons why we have chosen Lorenzo Varela as our MVP!
  • 2017 GSSL MOP (Most Outstanding Player)
    • Bryan Rodriguez
      • This was a no question, no brainer decision. Rodriguez fired 8 goals past the goalies in the GSSL and he created a presence on the court that produced all the offense for his team. Whether you love him or hate him, he is by FAR the most outstanding player we have in this league!
  • 2017 GSSL DPOY (Defensive Player of the Year)
    • Aaron Lopez
      • With two of the best defenders in our league on the Wolverines and Caleb Baltazar having the best pass of the season in Week 6, we had a tough decision to make. However, we decided to go strictly on defensive performance and clearly Mr. Lopez is the obvious pick. He plays a gritty style and is not afraid to mix it up with the opposing team. Every team needs an Aaron Lopez and this is why we have chosen him for this award.
  • 2017 GSSL Freshman Phenom (Best Rookie)
    • Carlos Perez
      • Omar Lemus made this race VERY CLOSE down the stretch, but ultimately our award for rookie of the year goes to Mr. Perez. Carlos played a fantastic season in which he never really did anything wrong. He may have not always been in the limelight…but he always contributed to his team including 3 goals!
  • 2017 GSSL Goalie of the Year (Best Goalie)
    • Maico Rubio
      • Going into Week 5, the Goalie of the Year was Jonathan Reimers’ to lose! However, once the Wolverines lit up Reimers and then he struggled mightily against the Wildcats, we unanimously voted Maico to be the Goalie of the Year. While he did face the least amount of shots and had the fewest saves, he did everything he was required to do to keep his team out of the L column! By the way, he only gave up 3 goals in 5 games…he’s good!
  • 2017 GSSL Goal of the Year (Best Goal)
    • Omar Lemus in Week 6
      • We had to wait until the final week of the season to see our best goal! Although we did see some top class goals throughout the season, we witnessed one of the greatest goals in the history of the GSSL as Omar went top drawer with a rocket from about the free throw line to put his name in the record books for good! Be sure to check the Facebook Page to watch the replay!
  • 2017 GSSL Best Set Up (Best Assist)
    • Caleb Baltazar in Week 6
      • With one of the best floating passes we have ever seen, Caleb set Carlos Perez up magnificently with a lovely ball from half court. Carlos headed the ball past goalie Jeremiah Lendt for a sweet finish, but the ball from Caleb was beyond spectacular!
  • 2017 GSSL Sportmanship Award (Least Fouls combined with Best Class)
    • Lorenzo Varela: 1 foul
      • Lorenzo plays the game with aggression and determination, but he has a lid on his fuse. We appreciate players who can play with fierce tenacity; but also remember that we are training to be in the ministry and ultimately it is just a game!
  • 2017 GSSL Unsung Hero (Best Unknown Player)
    • Miguel Gomez
      • While he may have given up 4 goals in his short goalie job with the Wildcats in Week 1, Miguel provided excellent defense and solid mid-fielding throughout the rest of the season! He was able to shut down big name strikers like B-Rod and Aarion Johnson in different games. His name may not have been called much, but his performance spoke for itself!
