With 1 week remaining in the 2017 Golden State Soccer League regular season, we take a moment to look at the playoff tie breaking scenarios going into the final week, Week 6! The Yellow Wolverines already have the #1 spot locked in, but the remaining three spots are still up for grabs. Let us review what the tie breaking procedures for the GSBC Intramural Sports Program: 1) Overall Record, 2) Head to Head Record, 3) Overall Point (Goal in Soccer) Differential, 4. Head to Head Point (Goal in Soccer) Differential and 5) Overall Points (Goals in Soccer) Scored.

  • Maroon Cardinals (1-3-1, W-D-L, 6 points) vs Blue Wildcats (1-2-2, W-D-L, 5 points)
    • Since the Cardinals hold the head to head tiebreaker with the Green Bulls, the Cardinals ONLY need a DRAW to reserve the #2 spot going into the playoffs. The Wildcats however MUST WIN against the Cardinals to take over the #2 spot going into the playoffs. The Wildcats have not won since Week 1, so they will be looking for some kind of momentum going into the playoffs.
      • With a WIN, the Cardinals clinch the #2 spot. With a DRAW, the Cardinals clinch the #2 spot. With a LOSS and a Bulls WIN, the Cardinals will drop to the #4 spot in the playoffs. With a LOSS and a Bulls DRAW or LOSS, the Cardinals will take the #3 spot in the playoffs.
      • With a WIN, the Wildcats clinch the #2 spot. With a DRAW and a Bulls DRAW or LOSS, the Wildcats will take the #3 spot in the playoffs. With a LOSS and a Bulls WIN or DRAW, the Wildcats will take the #4 spot going into the playoffs.

  • Green Bulls (1-1-3, W-D-L, 4 points) vs Yellow Wolverines (3-2-0, W-D-L, 11 points)
    • We already know that the Wolverines have clinched the #1 seed in the 2017 GSSL playoffs, but the Green Bulls still have ALOT to play for.
      • If the Bulls WIN against the Wolverines and the Wildcats either DRAW or LOSE against the Cardinals, the Bulls will get the #3 spot going into the playoffs.
      • If the Bulls DRAW with the Wolverines and the Wildcats LOSE to the Cardinals, the Bulls will get the #3 spot due to overall point differential. (The Wildcats are -4 while the Bulls are -2)
      • If the Bulls WIN and the Cardinals LOSE, the Bulls would take the #3 spot.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that we will probably be watching these same matchups back to back weeks unless the unthinkable happens and the Bulls upset the Wolverines. In that case, WOW!
