In what was built and hyped to be one of the biggest weekends in the history of the GSBC Intramural Sports Program, the athletes did not let us down! We witnessed the men and ladies of GSBC put on a show that was “Olympic worthy.”

We started with the Golden State Flag Football League. There was so much anticipation last week when the Green Spartans and Black Ninjas went toe to toe in a thrilling opening clash! Unfortunately, that game was our ONLY game. Due to the forfeiture by the Maroon Rattlers, we only got to see one game last weekend! This weekend brought forth our first doubleheader. The Green Spartans were going to do battle with the Golden War Eagles in what was being hailed as our “Game of the Week.” The start to the game totally caught us off guard as Marcus Peterson ran 60 yards to the house on the first play of game! However, THAT was the only bright spot for the War Eagles as they would be outscored 35-6 the rest of the way as the Green Spartans were brilliant for a 35-12 victory! Team Captain DJ Chitty attributed his team’s success to his offensive line and how “they were always there making a big play.” The Spartans will play the Rattlers on October 14th after we come out of the BYE.

The second game of our doubleheader featured the heavily favored Black Ninjas against the 0-1 Maroon Rattlers who came off the heels of a forfeited 2-0 result. However, we were stunned to realize that the athletes that Team Captain Jon Keeton drafted are indeed the best drafted team in this year’s GSFFL! We witnessed an absolute thrashing on both sides of the ball as they chased The Surgeon, Sam Slattery, with back to back pick sixes! the bleeding did not stop for the Ninjas as they eventually fell 37-12! After falling to the Rattlers and with the future of the Starting QB in the balance, the question remains: what will become of the Black Ninjas in Week 3??

We continued our coverage over the weekend with Week 1 in the Golden State Volleyball League! Our sister station, the GSBC Intramural Sports Network, is directly in charge of keeping people updated with the status of the GSVL! It was indeed an incredible beginning with the sky as the limit for the Huskies captained by two time reigning champ, Janelle Baltazar! Another high note was the serving by Alyssa Neal for the Bears! WOW, what an arm!!

Our weekend coverage concluded with a cracker of an evening in the 2017 Golden State Soccer League! A doubleheader which pitted the two 1-0 teams against each other while the two 0-1 teams battled for their first W. The first game saw the Yellow Wolverines and the Maroon Cardinals fight it out for supremacy in this year’s GSSL. Unfortunately, the game ended in a 0-0 draw. Much to the chagrin of the live audience and the live viewer audience online, we witnessed one of the best games in GSSL history come to an end with a tie! Highlights would be that Jon Reimers is a stalwart goaltender who has established himself as one of the best in our league! Also, Aaron Lopez and Bryan Rodriguez received yellow cards for “too much physical contact.”

The night cap spotlighted the 0-1 teams and boy did their 2nd half not disappoint!! Lorenzo Varela broke the net with a beauty of a strike to open the scoring. Alejandro Lizardi followed up with a laser bean that caught goalie Joseph Lalman off guard! But the thrilling 2nd half was not complete until Varela set up Brian Alvarado for the eventual game winning goal!

The weekend of September 30 – October 1 may be over, but the effort and hustle by the athletes of GSBC were not overlooked! In fact, a record breaking online audience set the standard for what is building to be one of the best fall semesters in the history of the GSBC Intramural Sports Program! We received views in at least 18 states, 3 provinces and 3 countries besides the US and Canada! A big thank you to our worldwide audience and an even bigger thank you to the many parents, friends and students who shared the feeds on your Facebook timelines! That helped us tremendously!
